An unidentified gunman who held off law enforcement for nearly 21 hours in Havre was pronounced dead at a Havre hospital on Monday night, April 7.

News Director at KOJM Radio in Havre, Brandon Baney, says the incident began on Sunday night in front of the U.S. Bank building.

“Acting Havre police chief Gabe Matosich says that at 7:42 p.m. the unidentified man sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Baney said. “He was taken to the Havre hospital and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.”

Baney details how the standoff incident began.

“The standoff began just after 11 p.m. Sunday on First Street, in front of the U.S. Bank building,” Baney said. “The Havre Police department, Hill County Sheriff’s Department, Montana Highway Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, the FBI, probation patrol and even members of the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office and Great Falls Police Department assisted with the negotiations. Most of the streets in downtown Havre were closed during the standoff.”

The suspect’s name has not yet been released, and no one else was injured during the incident.
