Governor and First Lady Bullock to Join “The Dude” in Darby to Talk About School Breakfast

Photo courtesy of Jason Merritt/Staff/Getty ImagesGovernor Steve Bullock says he plans on visiting a classroom in Darby the week of March 17, where he will be making an appearance with a movie star.

“It is exciting that we are going to be coming down to Darby with Billy Shore who’s the head of “Share our Strength,” which is a national childhood hunger organization,” Bullock said. “Also, some time resident/part time resident of Montana, Jeff Bridges, and my wife will be there as well, to really highlight some of the good things that are happening in Darby.”

Bridges, also known as “The Dude” from indie hit The Big Lebowski has starred in blockbusters like Iron Man and at least seven films that were shot in Montana.  Bridges is the spokesperson for the Share Our Strength No Kid Hungry campaign and will be highlighting the Darby School Breakfast program.

“[Darby has] a universal program,” said Bullock, describing the attributes of Darby’s breakfast program he would like to see used in classrooms around the state. “You don’t have to put in any paperwork or show any level of poverty to participate, and they have it after the bell, so after the bell rings, more or less, you can get breakfast. For the little ones, it’s actually in the classroom and there’s grab-and-go for older kids.”

Bullock said the program isn’t about taking food choices away from parents, but about making sure all students have the nourishment they need to perform well in school.

Governor Bullock said says his favorite Bridges film is 1974′s “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot,” which was filmed out near the gates of the mountains where Bullock worked as a tour-boat driver in his youth.
