HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A 27-year-old ex-Marine attending college in Colorado is running for Congress in Montana. Lee Newspapers of Montana reports that Vincent Melkus filed paperwork Tuesday to appear as a Republican on the ballot. Melkus grew up in Arizona, but spent many summers in Montana and relocated to
the state shortly before joining the Marines in 2004. He says his family lives in Hardin, where he will move upon graduation this spring from Colorado Mesa University.

So far, Bozeman by businessman Steve
Daines has established himself as the clear front runner in the GOP
field with solid fundraising and plenty of endorsements. On the other
side, Democrats have a crowded and competitive primary battle.

U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg is vacating the seat to challenge U.S. Sen. Jon Tester.
