A bow hunter has been wounded injured in an encounter with a lone grizzly bear in northwest Montana.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks grizzly bear management specialist Mike Madel says the man is expected to recover from wounds to his head and legs.

Madel tells the Great Falls Tribune that the encounter occurred Saturday on private land in the Muddy Creek drainage about 20 miles northwest of Choteau.

He says the hunter came upon the grizzly in its day bed in dense, riparian cover along the Rocky Mountain Front while hunting elk with his brother.

Madel says the brothers had separated when the encounter occurred. The injured hunter was able to walk away after the encounter and call for his brother.

The encounter is still under investigation.
