As a mom, I care about what goes into my children bodies. I hate when my kids are sick and like to do whatever I can to make them feel better, but I am weary of all the medications that are on the market today. If at all possible, I prefer to use natural alternatives to cure what is ailing my little ones. Here are some of my favorite home remedies.

  • Oatmeal – It’s not just good for you inside, but outside also. Oatmeal is great for soothing skin ailments like eczema, sunburn and hives. Oats contain phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe itchy and inflamed skin. It is best to use finely ground colloidal oats sold in drugstores, but any unflavored oatmeal is helpful. Grind a cup of oats in a food processor until they dissolve easily into a glass of water then pour the solution into a bathtub full of warm water and soak for 15 minutes. If using colloidal oats, you can just sprinkle them into the tub.

  • Honey – There is nothing like hot tea with honey for a sore throat, but did you know that honey also helps heal minor-to-moderate burns on the skin. A protein called defensin-1 gives honey its antibacterial action. Put warm honey on the burn and then wrap it with gauze, be sure to change once a day.

  • Salt – This is great for sinus congestion or a sore throat. Mixing salt into water at a stronger concentration than what is in the human body helps to draw fluids out of the body’s tissues. Dissolve half a teaspoon of non-iodized salt in an 8-ounce glass of water and gargle to help ease a sore throat.

  • Peppermint tea – I love peppermint tea. Not only does it taste great, but it also helps soothe stomachache and indigestion. Oil found in the stems and the leaves of the peppermint plant help to calm the muscles of the digestive tract, allowing gas to pass more easily and relieving indigestion. It is important to steer clear of peppermint tea if your pain is caused by reflux as it will aggravate it.
