A winter blast is headed towards Montana from Canada and is due to arrive by the end of the coming weekend and continuing through next week.

Meteorologist Corby Dickerson at the National Weather Service office in Missoula said the initial wave of cold weather will arrive late Sunday.

"There's a cold front coming down out of Canada that will bring with it a good chance of early rain that will probably turn into up to an inch of snow in the valley by the time we get to Monday morning," Dickerson said. "By late Monday afternoon, the precipitation will move out and there will be breezy conditions, but the real cold doesn't get here till we get to the middle part of the week."

"Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we've got a deep arctic air mass moving in from Canada that's just going to bull rush across the Continental Divide," he said. "Our friends in Eastern Montana will be getting the worst of this system. Here in Missoula, we'll be seeing temperatures getting down into the teens or even the single digits by the middle of next week, with highs not even reaching the freezing mark."

Dickerson encourages listeners to get their last-minute yard work done this weekend, with highs in the 40's and low 50's, because the weather will begin to worsen by late Sunday.
