Wednesday evening, former Commissioner of Higher Education Sheila Stearns received a most unexpected call from current Commissioner Clayton Christian asking her to be the interim President of the University of Montana.

University of Montana President Royce Engstrom will resign his office as of December 31, according to Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian.

KGVO News received word just after 8:00 a.m. on Thursday on that UM President Royce Engstrom would be resigning from office as of December 31.

The day after the Montana Supreme Court returned the matter of confidential student records being released to a best-selling author to the Lewis and Clark District Court, Associate Commissioner of Higher Education Kevin McRae said the Board of Regents was pleased with the decision.

The Montana Board of Regents held a regularly scheduled meeting in Helena on Tuesday and approved all items on their agenda, including raises for faculty and staff at schools struggling with enrollment issues.

Whether or not tuition will remain frozen for university students in Montana depends on passage of a pay plan agreement with state employees.

The University of Montana officially opened the Eloise Cobell Land and Culture Institute on Friday afternoon. The institute is located within the Payne Family Native American Center, just off the UM oval.
