A local sportsmen's organization, Western Montana Fish and Game, is sponsoring an essay contest for high school age youth, with a $1,000 first prize.

President of the Montana Shooting Sports Association Gary Marbut, said the subject matter is the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

"The subject is 'Why is the right to keep and bear arms relevant today?'," Marbut said. "The essay contest is open to any high school-age student in Missoula or adjacent counties, including Ravalli, Mineral, Granite and Lake counties, and the deadline is coming up pretty soon, it's January 31st."

Other prizes are $750 for second place, $500 for third, $250 for fourth place, and $50 each  for fifth through 14th places.

Marbut said the essay must be from 500 to 2,000 words, and all rules for the contest are available online at the organization's website.
