Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Average gas prices in Montana have increased in 25 out of 38 weeks. Prices were unchanged last week and took a big drop this week. Patrick De Haan is the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, and he provided the current numbers.

“Average gasoline prices in Montana have fallen 4.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.19 per gallon today,” De Haan said. “Prices in Montana are 3.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 11 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.”

As of Monday morning, many stations in Missoula had dropped their prices from around $3.24 per gallon to $3.09, which is the biggest drop of 2025.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Montana was priced at $2.88 per gallon yesterday, while the most expensive was $4.19 per gallon.

Montana is currently ranked 14th in the U.S. when it comes to the average price of gas, which is two spots lower than last week.

"The national average price of gasoline has risen 2.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.14 per gallon today,” De Haan said. “The national average is unchanged from a month ago and stands 1.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 0.7 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $3.67 per gallon.”

According to De Haan, the national average increased last week because some states experienced price cycling just ahead of the switch back to winter gasoline.

“Florida, Ohio, Michigan, and Maryland— all states known for routine price cycling— saw double-digit jumps to average gas prices,” said De Haan. “Now that much of the nation has begun the transition to cheaper winter gasoline and with driving demand seasonally tapering off as temperatures dip, gas prices face additional downward pressure.”

De Haan said we're still on track to potentially see the national average fall below $3 per gallon for the first time in years this autumn.
