It's a a rare variety of a mineral prized for its unique color-changing properties, shifting from green in daylight to red in incandescent light.

And while he is neither green or red, this Alexandrite is a beauty to behold. And he would make a fine addition to your puppy-loving home.

It was another Take Me Home Tuesday at the radio stations with the Humane Society of Western Montana, presented by our animal-loving friends at Paul's Pancake Parlor in Missoula. Katie from the Humane Society brought in "Alexandrite," or Alex for short. Alex is a super-sweet, calm 9-week old pup, the last of four brought to Missoula from the Wolf Point shelter, all of which were named after beautiful minerals. Katie expects this guy to be on the larger side when he grows up.

ALEXANDRITE'S SPECIAL NEEDS CONDITION

Alex does have an inflammatory bone condition that is more common in large breeds. That is something his future family needs to be aware of, but dogs with this condition still lead very full normal long lives. Alex is far from being in pain all the time. But, when the condition flares up, he just might need some pain meds from time to time in the first couple years of his life.
