Montana’s Halloween Score: How We Compare to Our Neighbors
Fall in Montana is a special time of year. We get to experience all kinds of changes with our weather and the changing of the leaves. It’s also time for one of the best holidays ever, Halloween.
The traditions associated with Halloween make me feel like a kid again. How cool that you can just go buy big bags of candy — and no one questions it? I look forward each year to picking up a box of Boo Berry or Franken Berry cereal. People just assume the cereal is for my kids, but it’s all for me.

Some have proposed celebrating Halloween on the last Saturday in October. I am totally for it. Being an early-morning radio announcer makes celebrating the holiday difficult. It’s tough to put on a costume early in the morning and stay up late handing out candy to trick-or-treaters. I feel like I only get to celebrate the holiday once every few years.
How Montana Compares to Neighboring States
Not everyone in Montana gets as excited about Halloween as I do. According to a survey conducted by Talker Research, on behalf of the candy Hi-Chew, Montanans don’t love Halloween as much as our neighbors.

According to the report, Montana received a score of 3.77 on a scale of 1 to 5. Idaho leads at 4.21, followed by North Dakota at 4.19, Wyoming at 4.06, and South Dakota at 3.96.
Why Shifting Halloween to Saturday Makes Sense
The average American will buy 4.5 bags of candy this year — favoring chocolate treats.. There will be over 62 million pumpkins carved this year.
