Just because it's the end of August and I'm already wearing a cable-knit sweater doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to all of the festivals and parades that signal it is fall in Montana.

Yes, there is something special about the scent of sunscreen and the ice cream melting down your hand when you attend some of Montana's best summer festivals, but quite a few that happen during the fall are well worth attending. September 5 - September 8: Clash of the Carvers - Libby, Montana

It's an incredible display of talent from all over the world. There's prize money for the carvers and an array of creations made from wood to be enjoyed by everyone attending.

September 6 - 7: River City Roots Festival - Missoula, Montana

The 18th Annual music festival in downtown Missoula is free to the public and features live music, art, and all kinds of good stuff.

September 28: Montana Brewers' Oktoberfest - Missoula, Montana

Now in its fourth year, this event hosted by Cranky Sam's Pub is a battle of the Oktoberfest beers. There's also a stein holding competition and a competition for best dressed. Ordering tickets in advance is recommended.

September 29: Fall Harvest Festival - Missoula, Montana

Held at the Historical Fort Missoula, this event will give you the chance to try out traditional fall activities like using an apple press or tour the Hayes Homestead Cabin. There will be food trucks and activities for the family, too.

October 4 - October 12 - Scarecrow Festival - Stevensville, Montana

This might be the home of the most creative scarecrows in the whole state. But it's not just about the scarecrows, there's pumpkin carving contests, a "monster mash dance party" and more.

October 5: Montana State University Homecoming Parade - Bozeman, Montana

The homecoming parade is a long tradition and only one of many homecoming week activities for Bobcat alumni.

October 6: Germanfest - Missoula, Montana

Celebrate Missoula's sister city, Neckargemund, Germany with German-inspired activities at Caras Park. Never seen fish slapping? This is the festival for you.

October 12: University of Montana Homecoming Parade - Missoula, Montana

See your favorite floats and cheer on the Griz at the University of Montana homecoming parade. This year's theme is "A Fall Affair."

October 12: 20th Annual Harvest Fest - Billings, Montana

Hang out under the Skypoint in downtown Billings and enjoy great food, live entertainment, more stein-holding contests, face painting and more.
