It's been a few years since there was a city fireworks show in Missoula. The Southgate Mall shows were traditions for a lot of Missoulians, and there are still a lot people who miss those shows.

The Missoula Paddleheads baseball team has been known to put on fireworks displays after some of their games. The past few years the fireworks shows have been close to the 4th of July, but this year they are planning on having fireworks on the actual holiday, depending on fire danger and weather conditions.

Fireworks are Prohibited in City of Missoula

The city of Missoula is reminding people that fireworks in the city and on city open space lands are prohibited. They are prohibited on all state and federal public lands and not allowed in Missoula County parks and county-managed recreation areas.

The fines for getting caught illegally setting off fireworks can be pricey. The first offense fine is $100 plus court costs. If you get a second offense within the calendar year of the first offense, the fine is $300 plus court costs. To report violations you can call the fireworks hotline 406-258-4850 or 9-1-1. The hotline will be available late June through July 5.

A couple years back my neighbor's backyard and tree caught on fire from fireworks. It was a stressful time, but the Missoula Fire Department was fast and professional putting the fire out and protecting other structures in the neighborhood.

According to the Missoula County Fire Protection Association the current fire danger is rated as high. Fireworks go on sale in Montana from June 24—July 5, so don't be surprised if next week you start hearing cracks, bangs, and pops in neighborhoods as soon as next week.
