Have you ever wondered what you would do if a Zombie apocalypse actually happened? If so, I have some GOOD NEWS for you! If you live in Montana, then you are already in one of the best states for surviving a zombie apocalypse.

A team of scientists set out to determine which states would survive the best if things ever went full Walking Dead. They focused on things like population density, water access, airports, hospitals, outdoor supply stores, and military bases. Essentially, everything you’d need in case the neighbors get a craving for some brains.

Montana’s Odds Are Good

Montana was fourth, behind Alaska, Maine, and South Dakota. Which is essentially the Mount Rushmore of “We Don’t Mess Around” states. The math is straightforward: fewer people, more space, more resources. We have so much wide-open land, strong outdoor culture, and alternative ways to live off the grid if things head south.

Why Montanans Are Hard to Eat

  • Fewer zombies per square mile. Low population = fewer zombies: Let’s be honest, rural areas and the Midwest are just better in the zombie apocalypse.
  • Hunting is something everybody has done or at least knows a guy who knows how to hunt.
  • We know our way around a sporting goods store. (And, many of us already own a fair bit of gear that is also survival-ready.)

In the meantime, good luck to New York or California trying to speed through zombies on a log-jammed freeway. They rank near the bottom of the survivability scale.

Don’t Get Too Cozy

Yeah, we’re in the rankings, but it’s not gonna be a cakewalk. The research is more of a reminder that rural states have an upper hand when the fecal matter makes contact with the spinning blades. Zombies, wildfires, blizzards, or whatever, it’s nice to be prepared.

Never Run Out of Ammo

Our local bladesmiths, Zombie Tools, were featured on a television series called "SURVIVING ZOMBIES: The Apocalypse Field Guide" that aired on the Science Channel in 2012. Their belief is that swords and knives are essential to surviving the apocalypse. Because you will eventually run out of bullets. Oh, and fans of the show will know that survival also requires multiple cases of PBR.

BRAINS?

So if the undead ever do roll through town, Montana stands a pretty good chance. Pack your gear, phone your hunting partner, and rendezvous at the trailhead. And don't forget the beer.
