Good sportsmanship has no place in one state.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has given the green light to a somewhat controversial measure in which athletes can no longer give postgame handshakes. The guideline applies to baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball and wrestling.

The organization has put the kibosh on the ritual after reports of more than two dozen fights breaking out over the last three years.

The policy is more of a recommendation than a steadfast rule, at this point. If schools elect to take part in handshakes and no incidents occur, the KHSAA won’t do anything, although schools are expected to report any altercations that may take place.
