An odd situation has developed from Montana's unusual winter weather.

National Weather Service hydrologist Ray Nickless in Missoula says there is a discrepancy between precipitation and snowpack across the state.

While precipitation is above average, it hasn't resulted in above average snowpack.

For example, the Grave Creek Snotel site in the Kootenai River Basin of northwest Montana recorded 110 percent of its normal precipitation between October and March.

But the Missoulian reports that its snowpack at 4,300 feet above sea level was just 45 percent of normal.

Nickless says that's because more precipitation has fallen as rain instead of snow as normal.
