Fire crews responded to a possible structure fire in Pompeys Pillar over the weekend.

"When we arrived on scene, we had three structures on fire in the timber, just east of the Pompeys Pillar Post Office, burning east toward an inhabited structure. The three buildings that were lost were uninhabited and there were several vehicles that were destroyed," Worden Fire Chief Carl Midgley said. "As far as what caused it, I couldn't tell you exactly. I know the sheiff's department is treating it as an arson investigation."

Midgley predicts the fire started at a shed near a post office and spread to Fly Creek, but was contained before it reached Interstate 94.

"After speaking with the landowner, it wasn't a big loss for him. They were just really old cabins that probably needed to be destroyed anyways and just older vehicles that weren't being used," Midgley said. "From what he told me last night, it wasn't a big loss."

No injuries were reported. Midgley said the investigation into whether or not the fire was arson is still ongoing.
