Watch the Second Largest Geyser in the World Explode in Yellowstone For First Time in Five Years

Just hours after a rare lunar eclipse on Sunday, a Geyser in Yellowstone National Park that hasn’t erupted for over five years exploded under a full moon. No one was around to watch the natural wonder, but according to park ranger Annie Carlson, it was all caught on tape by a webcam.

"Giant is one of the largest geysers in the world, many people consider it to be the second tallest and most voluminous geyser after Steamboat Geyser, which is also in Yellowstone National Park," Carlson explained. "We got word that people had seen the plume using our live-streaming web cam, and it was visible because there was a full moon. If it was dark out, probably no one would have seen it."

Unlike Old Faithful, Carlson says Giant Geyser is very sporadic.

"It has been known to erupt up to 275 feet, some people estimate about a million gallons of water," Carlson said. "A lot of people would like to see Giant, but it is not predictable, like Old Faithful, which goes several times a day. Giant Geyser hasn't erupted since January of 2010, so, more than 5 and a half years in-between."

Giant Geyser erupted many times in 2008, but then went off the grid after 2010, it is impossible to know if this recent eruption is the beginning more frequent eruptions or not.
