Powell County authorities say a Deer Lodge police officer shot and killed a suicidal man after he pointed a gun at officers who were trying to negotiate with him.

Sheriff Scott Howard says that 28-year-old Nicholas Tyson Frazier died at the hospital of injuries suffered in the shooting shortly before midnight on Friday.

NBC Montana reports that Howard said Monday that officers responding to Frazier's 911 call found Frazier with a gun pointed at his head. The dispatcher and two officers tried to get Frazier to put the gun down, but he instead pointed it at the officers.

Officers Gavin Roselles and Erik Miller are on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. Howard would not say which officer shot Frazier.

Howard says this was the first officer-involved shooting in Deer Lodge in at least 29 years.
