Unhappy Homecoming for Montana Grizzlies

Homecoming 2012

‘Streaks were meant to be broken’. ‘It had to happen sometime’. Phrases like these were overheard after the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks came into Washington Grizzly stadium in Missoula and do what few teams had done…beat Montana…and during Homecoming.

NAU hadn’t won in Washington Grizzly stadium since way back in 1986. Former Griz defensive coordinator and present Lumberjack head coach Jerome Sauers had never beaten Montana…until Saturday, when the Jacks humbled Montana by a score of 41 to 31.

And the score wasn’t even that close until late in the 4th quarter when back-up quarterback Shay Smithwick Hann hit wide receiver Ellis Henderson for a touchdown to make the score a bit more respectable.

The two big stories of the game…NAU running back Zach Bauman who galloped and caught his way to nearly 300 years of total offense, starting with a sparkling 75 yard scamper into the end zone on the first play from scrimmage.

The Grizzlies did their part, turning the ball over 5 times, with three Trent McKinney interceptions, and two fumbles by running back Dan Moore.

The road doesn’t get any easier for Montana (2-2) (0-1 in conference play) when the Griz travel to Roos Field, dubbed ‘The Inferno’ to play a very good Eastern Washington team on September 29th.

Townsquare Media and Town Pump invite you to the first-ever outdoor viewing party at Caras Park,to watch the Griz take on the Eagles on the big screen, with radio play-by-play with Voice of the Griz Mick Holien.  There will be food booths, refreshments, games and prizes…and yours truly Peter Christian as emcee, doing the ‘First Down’ honors. The event is free, with pre-game activities starting at 2 p.m. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
