If you want to put a lump of coal in the Christmas stocking of any Montana hunter, this is the kind of news that will do it.

Grit your teeth. Get mad. And help if you can. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information on two bull elk that were killed south of Pompeys Pillar National Monument over the weekend and illegally left to waste. A game warden said that the elk were killed on private land. Their heads were removed and most of the rest of the animals were left to waste.

The incident being investigated didn't occur in what you would call western Montana's back yard, happening south of Interstate 94. But anyone with information is encouraged to contact FWP's 24-hour reporting service, 1-800-TIP-MONT (847-6668). Callers can remain anonymous.

Very sad and disgusting, huh?
