Two men who police say broke into a Great Falls apartment and wrote racist terms on the walls and kitchen counters have been charged with hate crimes.

The Great Falls Tribune reports that Jesse J. Boland and Randy Scott Hayes appeared in Cascade County District Court on Thursday and are also charged with felony burglary.

Boland and Hayes are white. The apartment police say the two vandalized is occupied by two African-Americans.

Police say the cost of cleaning the apartment from the damage that occurred Monday is $1,500. The value of the stolen items is estimated to be less than $1,500.

Court documents say Hayes wrote an apology note and that he'd be willing to wash the walls and replace damaged posters.
