Iraqi troops have begun a push into the city of Fallujah, which has been held by the Islamic State for over two years.

The Iraqis are getting air support from the U.S.-led coalition in an offensive that began about a week ago. The advance is expected to be slow, in an effort to minimize civilian casualties.

An Iraqi special forces commander says the clashes are "fierce," with IS extremists deploying snipers and releasing a volley of mortar rounds.

The offensive comes as a wave of bombings has struck commercial areas of Baghdad today, killing at least 24 people. IS claims it carried out the attacks.
