April Spielman wanted to make her boyfriend’s 16th birthday special. So the 15-year-old woke up at 4am and put on a painstakingly detailed Tinker Bell costume which she had spent the last few months preparing. When that was done, she accompanied her beau, who was dressed as Peter Pan, on his maiden trip to Disney World.

Their first stop at Disney Hollywood Studio was uneventful. But when they headed over to the Animal Kingdom, they were denied entry because Spielman’s Tinker Bell costume was too good.

Disney’s stated policy forbids adults to wear “costumes or clothing that can be viewed as representative of an actual Disney character.” This is because they don’t want kids to confuse visitors dressed as characters like Tinker Bell with the actress Disney has trained to play Tinker Bell at the theme park.

Disney officials did give Spielman the chance to enter the Animal Kingdom, as long as she covered up the costume with a T-shirt they provided her. So she did, but told WKMG in Orlando that it just wasn’t the same.

“They were talking how the little girls, it ruins their dreams,” she recounted, while crying. “But it ruined my dreams because I just want to be Tinker Bell.”

You can watch Spielman’s entire weepy interview below. Do you think she has a point? Or does Disney’s policy make sense? (And is Spielman a little too old to get so worked up about not being allowed to play dress up?)
