Mike Cooney Decries Lack of Leadership at Recent Legislative Session

In addition to proudly accepting an award for the KGVO News Team at the Montana Broadcasters Association Convention on Saturday night, I also had the opportunity to interview forner state legislator, Montana Secretary of State and one-time gubernatorial candidate Mike Cooney about the recently completed legislative session. Medical Pot Providers Face Conspiracy Charges

Three medical marijuana providers have been arraigned in the first criminal case stemming from a series of federal raids this spring on Montana pot distributors.

Jason Burns, Jesse Leland and Joshua Schultz appeared Wednesday on charges of conspiracy, manufacture of marijuana, distribution of marijuana and money laundering.

Medical Pot Group Asks Judge to Block New Law

An attorney for a medical marijuana industry group is asking a judge to block a new Montana law eliminating the sale of medical pot before it takes effect next month.

James Goetz, attorney for the Montana Cannabis Industry Association, told Helena District Judge James Reynolds Monday that the law is unconstitutional.

Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana supporters are already planning to gather signatures for a voter initiative to block strict regulations set to become law this summer.

Last month the Legislature passed a bill that limits access to marijuana by doing away with pot businesses and setting new standards for patients and doctors.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer says he will allow the bill to become law without his signature.

A panel of lawmakers has agreed on a final version of a proposal to overhaul Montana’s medical marijuana industry. Senate Bill 423 will now go to the House, and Senate, for approval, and, if it passes, it will then go to Governor Brian Schweitzer.
