Elouise Cobell, Plaintiff In $3.4 Billion Lawsuit, Dies

A spokesman for Elouise Cobell says the Blackfeet woman who led a 15-year fight to force the U.S. government to account for more than a century of mismanaged Indian land royalties has died.

She was 65.

Local Governments Sue Governor Schweitzer Over Vetoes

Six local governments have filed a lawsuit against Gov. Brian Schweitzer over his line-item vetoes of money for their local bridge and water projects.

Carbon, Fergus, Madison and Sweet Grass counties, the city of Roundup and the town of Sheridan filed the lawsuit in District Court in Helena last week. They also named Commerce Director Dore Schwinden and the state of Montana.

County Suffers Setback In Megaload Lawsuit

Judge Ray Dayton dismissed a claim yesterday that Montana transportation officials violated the state constitution when they approved an oil company's plans to haul oversized refinery equipment through Montana to Canada's oil sands.
