The University of Montana released its 2014 spring enrollment numbers today, February 27, and are reporting total enrollment of 13,544 students, a decrease of 971 students from last fall.

The recently released National Association of Education Progress report for 2013 used standardized test results to show that most American eight-year-olds (66 percent) were not proficient at reading. The numbers, as collated by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, show that Montana children fare little better.

This week, November 20, the Montana Board of Regents will meet to discuss a variety of issues including the state's falling university enrollment numbers. One of the main topics will be the Complete College Montana Program, which hopes to increase graduation rates.

Montana's Jobs for Graduates program was ranked number one in the nation this week. Montana Department of Labor and Industry spokeswoman Casey Kyler-West said the program has proven to have a long list of positive outcomes.

Students arriving in school this week and next are likely to receive a special message from Governor Steve Bullock telling them to "make Montana proud."
