Suspect and Missoula Police Officer Identified in Fatal New Year's Eve Shooting

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office has released the identities of both the suspect who was shot and killed on New Year's Eve in Missoula, and that of the Missoula Police officer who fired the fatal shot.

Undersheriff Jason Johnson said Officer Paul Kelly fired the shot that killed Kaileb Williams, 20, after leading officers on a high speed chase through Missoula.

The incident began when a domestic disturbance call came in to 9-1-1 at 2 a.m. on Wednesday, which Investigators say involved Williams and two women.

At 3:15 a.m it was confirmed that the suspect had been shot at the on-off ramp connecting Broadway and North Reserve in Missoula.

Corporal Kelly has been a member of the Missoula Police Department for twelve years and has a total of fifteen years of service in law enforcement.

As dictated by department policy, Corporal Kelly will remain on administrative leave until the investigation is completed and it is been determined that it is appropriate for him to return to work.

Corporal Kelly fired one shot into the vehicle striking the suspect who was actively strangling the female victim.

Review of the officer’s dash camera, the suspect’s person and the vehicle indicate that only one shot was fired.

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office continues its investigation and will turn over all its information to the Missoula County Attorney's Office.
