Don Newcombe

Age: 86

Profession: Retired MLB Player

Best Known For: Don Newcombe played for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians during a career that spanned from 1949-1960. He was the first black pitcher to win 20 games in one season. Newcombe and Justin Verlander are the only baseball players to have won the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards in their career. Newcombe’s career record was 149–90. he is now a special adviser for the Dodgers.

Pat Summitt

Age: 60

Profession: Retired College Basketball Coach

Best Known For: Having guided the University of Tennessee to eight NCAA national championships from 1974 to 2012, Pat Head Summitt is considered by many to be the greatest women’s college basketball coach of all-time. With 1,098 victories, Summitt is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history, regardless of division. She retired in 2012 because of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Eric Heiden

Age: 54

Profession: Retired U.S. Olympian

Best Known For: Considered by many to be the greatest speed skater in history, Eric Heiden won five Olympic gold medals at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid in 1980. He was ranked No. 46 in ESPN’s SportsCentury ’50 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century’ in 1999. Heiden is now a practicing orthopedic surgeon near Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sam Perkins

Age: 51

Profession: Retired NBA Player

Best Known For: A two-time consensus All-American and member of the University of North Carolina’s 1982 NCAA national championship team, Sam Perkins went on to an 18-year career in the NBA. Perkins played for the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Seattle Supersonics and Indiana Pacers. He was a member of the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1985. He also was co-captain of the gold-medal winning 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Steffi Graf

Age: 43

Profession: Retired WTA Player

Best Known For:  One of the best women’s tennis players of all-time, Steffi Graf is a former world No. 1 player who won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, second only to Margaret Court’s 24. Graf won all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in 1988, something no other tennis player has ever done. Graf also held the No. 1 ranking for a record 377 total weeks. She is married to men’s tennis player Andre Agassi, who was also a former world No. 1 ranked-player.

Bruce Bowen

Age: 41

Profession: Retired NBA Player

Best Known For: A five-time selection to the NBA All-Defensive First Team, Bruce Bowen was a defensive specialist throughout his NBA career from 1997 to 2009. His most noteworthy time was spent with the San Antonio Spurs, whom he helped to three NBA championships (2003, 2005, 2007). The team has retired his number 12 jersey. Bowen currently works as an analyst for ESPN.
