The state summer games for Special Olympics Montana will be coming to Missoula this summer. Undersheriff Jason Johnson said the event hasn't been in Missoula for almost nine years.

"The summer games are about a week long here in Missoula during the week of May 19," Johnson said. "There will be lots of different summer sporting events that take place throughout the community. For example, there's track and field, there's equestrian, and there is also kayaking which will take place at Frenchtown Pond."

Before the big event, law enforcement agencies across the state will participate in a torch run.

"The torch run program in Montana is about 30 years old and it's about 34 years old in the world. But it's a program that exists solely to benefit the Special Olympics program and the athletes that we serve," Johnson said. "It's a worldwide organization that's run by law enforcement and we raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics programs in the communities that we serve."

Torches will be carried from eight different locations in the state, eventually ending in Missoula on the day when the games begin.
