Mustache Baby

The Stache Act (Stimulus to Allow Critical Hair Expenses) is advertised as a stimulus bill that would send $250.00 back to mustache wearing Americans in the form of a tax break. The act is really an ad for HR Block that deftly combines humor and sympathy (they support Millions from One an organization that brings clean water to areas in need). The real surprising thing is that the act is apparently on its way to the House Ways and Means committee after being referred without comment by the office of Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R) of Maryland.

To stretch the joke further, the American Mustache Institute (AMI) will hold a Million Mustache March on April 1st. It's funny, but what do you think of the actual bill?

In my mind the bill is creatively written to appeal to both the right (tax break) and the left (stimulus, environmental impact statement). I also read the act on a level that I'm not sure the authors intended. For me, the act satirizes the current state of  American democracy (voters voting on money for themselves) and a tax code built to guide what its designers see as "moral" behavior.
