Homes have been evacuated in a large area southwest of Hamilton due to the fast-moving Roaring Lion Fire.

The fire started about 2 p.m. in the Roaring Lion Canyon and blew up on Ward Mountain and Goat Mountain around the canyon. The forest fire quickly grew to over 500 acres and homes in the mouth of the canyon were evacuated by the Ravalli County Sheriff's Officers.

The Stage 2 evacuations were first extended to all of Roaring Lion Road and the lanes adjoining it, including Lupine Ridge, Two Horse Lane, Highland Drive, and North Gold Creek Loop.

Stage 2 evacuations then were extended again to portions of Owings Creek on the north and on Gold Creek Loop to Camas Creek Loop on the south.

US 93 was closed south of Hamilton at that time.

Stage 1 evacuation Warnings were added to other portions of Ownings Creek to Westside Road west of Wyant Lane.

Evacuation shelters have been set up:

  • Red Cross shelter at First Baptist Church in Hamilton at the corner of Lewis and Cooper Lane.
  • Evacuation shelter has been opened at Cornerstone Bible Church on Fairgrounds Road.
  • The Ravalli County Emergency Operations Center has been opened at (406) 375-6650 for the latest information on evacuation, evacuation shelters and livestock emergency placement.
