With a combined $158 million school bond issue looming in November, MCPS officials are asking the public to weigh in on possible new sites for schools that are slated to be replaced altogether.

At a meeting at Cold Springs School in lower Linda Vista on Monday evening, MCPS Superintendent Mark Thane went through the four alternatives for the new elementary school.

"The first, of course, is the present Cold Springs location on Briggs directly behind WalMart," Thane said. "The second is a five-acre parcel that the school district owns which is adjacent to Marilyn Park. The third site we're asking the public to consider is located off of Upper Miller Creek Road at the intersection of Miller Creek and Meriwether, and it's an undeveloped parcel. The final site is on Lower Miller Creek Road at the intersection of Bitterroot Road. It's a large parcel that's for sale right now."

Thane said with all the remodeling and new construction, the emphasis will be on security for the students and teachers, in addition to long range planning for growth.

Should the bond issues pass, the total property tax increase would be approximately $200 per year for a home valued at about $200,000. The issue will be on the general election ballot in November.
