The real mid-term election won't occur until November 4, but a statewide mock election is happening right now, October 30, and GOP candidates appear to have an unassailable lead.

"It's the student mock election all around the country, and its taking place all over," said Montana Secretary of State Linda McCulloch. "As of this morning, there were 60 Montana schools and almost 8,000 students, and that number should grow as the day goes on."

As of 1:00 p.m., Republican U.S. Senate Candidate Steve Daines had received more than double the amount of votes that Democrat Amanda Curtis had attained. In the U.S. House race, Republican Ryan Zinke was outpacing Democrat John Lewis by nearly 50 percent.

These votes won't be tallied in November, but they may indicate a trend, it all depends on how closely these votes match up with the real ballots counted on Election Day.

"Sometimes they are very accurate, and sometimes they are very inaccurate," Mcculloch said. "Sometimes they are right on and sometimes they are dead wrong, it is a matter of what schools sign up and where they are located. I think the most important thing is that the students are voting, they're participating in civics, the earlier a student starts voting the more likely they are to vote during their life, so I think it's important to have them vote while they are in school."

Students also voted for the Supreme Court, and on Legislative LR 126, the referendum to revise the closing date of late voter registration. The referendum was voted down, but Supreme Court race #2 between Mike Wheat and Lawrence Van Dyke was the closest race on the ballot.
