A 40-year-old Stevensville man was found dead in a car that crashed off U.S. Highway 93 south of Hamilton and into an empty irrigation ditch.

Ravalli County Undersheriff Steve Holton tells the Ravalli Republic the crash was found shortly after 5 p.m. Monday and officials are still trying to determine when and why the car crashed.

The Montana Highway Patrol says the car was southbound between Hamilton and Darby when it went off the road, through a fence and ended up in the ditch. Authorities believe the man died on impact. His name hasn't been released.
