The due date for filing for tax refunds for 2011 is fast approaching. According to the IRS, over three million dollars that should go to Montanans, will be headed to the U.S. Treasury if tax returns are not filed before April 15. Missoula-area CPA Walt Kero says the reason for this, is a three year statute of limitations.

"A tax return that's for April 15 of 2011 is due on April 15 of 2012, three years from then is April 15 of 2015, which is just a couple of weeks from now," Kero said. "Those folks, if they had refunds coming, will lose out, and, depending on fact and circumstances that could be a couple thousand bucks."

Kero says that Montanans have been missing out on their tax refunds for quite a while.

"This has been an ongoing thing," Kero said. "This phenomena has been going on for 20 or 30 years, and I don't get it because it is peoples money and they have it coming to them, but for whatever reason, they don't file."

According to the IRS, an estimated 3,700 Montanans were set to miss out on tax refunds as of March 2015. The median potential refund is $676.
