After over a month of frozen gas prices, Montana saw a big drop at the pump this week and is racing to catch up with the significantly lower national average.

"Certainly some great news for motorists," said gasbuddy.com Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "Average prices across the state of Montana for regular gasoline dropping close to five cents a gallon from $3.52 a gallon a week ago to $3.47 this morning. It's a trend we're seeing across the country: gas prices are taking a dive."

The drop likely because of Saudi Arabia lowering its crude prices last week. DeHaan says a price war may bring prices even lower.

"Whenever you see the Saudis dropping prices, you've got to wonder, 'Is another country now going to undercut Saudi Arabia?'", DeHaan said. "With the U.S. oil production booming, there is less need for that Middle Eastern crude oil and there may be a price war brewing for some of these major producers in the Middle East."

Montana prices will have to fall fast to catch up with the national average which is still about 17 cents lower and dropping.
