Montana Biologists Say Grizzlies Expanding Territory

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana biologists say they've been seeing more grizzly bear activity east of the Continental Divide in recent years.

The Independent Record reports that grizzly sightings have been confirmed both north and south of Helena. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist Jenny Sika says three grizzlies have been documented east of the Divide this year, including one in the Elkhorn Mountains south of Helena.

The area west of the Divide near Elliston is a known wildlife corridor for animals like bears, but Sika says movement is more limited east of the Divide. Sika says it's good for the species that the bears are expanding their territory.

She says people should take precautions while in bear country, including removing food, garbage and even water from outside homes and carrying bear spray.
