UPDATE - Saturday, October 31, 10:00 a.m.

Missoula County Attorney Kirsten Pabst attended the parole hearing of Rory Jay Castle on Friday in Deer Lodge. Pabst said the Montana Board of Pardons and Parole denied Castle's request, although with a caveat.

"We made the arguments and presented testimony on behalf of the victim before the parole board," Pabst said. "However, there were supporters there for Castle. Parole was denied. We asked that parole be denied for 100 years, which was what they had left to work with. They felt obligated to reexamine it in another three years. At least the victim has three more years of solace. We'll be back there again the next time he's up for parole."

This morning, October 30, Missoula County Attorney Kirsten Pabst drove to the Montana State Prison for a parole hearing for Rory Jay Castle. Castle was imprisoned in the early 90’s, convicted of the kidnapping and attempted deliberate homicide of his girlfriend. According to Pabst he deserves to stay behind bars.

"He had been, basically, torturing her for more than a year," Pabst said. "It was such a horrible offense. He tied her up, beat her, poured gasoline on her and through lit matches while threatening to kill her. She thought she was going to die and it's a miracle she didn't. We're going to try and convince the Parole Board that he should never be paroled and never be released. Guys like this are the reason we build prisons."

Pabst wasn’t alone in her trip to the prison, Cathy Dorle also plans to speak at the parole hearing in an attempt to give voice to the victim.

"Cathy Dorle is our Victim's Witness Coordinator," Pabst said. "Her job is to do what she can to help victims in the process. One of the areas in which she's been able to provide an enormous amount of help to us is in these post-conviction cases; parole hearings, appeals and things like that. She's going to represent this victim who is still in hiding 23 years later and is still trying to stay anonymous."

Pabst said the Parole Board should have a decision on whether or not Castle can be released by the end of the day.
