A Missoula couple were both killed in a rollover accident on Homestake Pass on Sunday morning.

The Butte-Silver Bow Coroner's office confirmed that 46 year-old Lester Monroe, Sr. and 34 year-old Margaret Monroe of Missoula died as the result of an accident on I-90's Homestake Pass just outside Butte. Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Gale Keith said the accident occurred at about 8:45 a.m. on Sunday.

"The vehicle was eastbound on I-90 at mile marker 228 ," Keith said. "The vehicle swerved left from the driving lane into the median. The driver over corrected back onto the interstate, rolled, and then came to rest back on its wheels again off the right side of the interstate. The driver was unbuckled, but the passenger was buckled."

Keith said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The female passenger was taken to St, James Healthcare where she later died," he said. "There were no other vehicles involved in the accident, and the investigation is ongoing."

Keith said neither alcohol nor excessive speed played a part in the fatal crash.
