Mick Delaney Now Official Griz Head Football Coach
The 'interim' tag has officially been removed from Griz Football Coach Mick Delaney. The University of Montana announced Thursday morning that Delaney has signed a two-year contract and is now the official head coach of the Grizzlies. The announcement came at a press conference held in the Canyon Club, fittingly located inside Washington Grizzly Stadium. Interim Athletics Director Jean Gee made the announcement after a brief introduction by University of Montana President Royce Engstrom.
Delaney accepted the interim head coaching position after Robin Pflugrad's contract was not renewed earlier this year. Delaney is in his 46th year of coaching, 30 of those at the collegiate level. Delaney faces many hurdles, none the least of which is the still uncertain future of Grizzly quarterback Jordan Johnson. As of this posting, Johnson is still enrolled at The University of Montana, and is still on the team roster. The Missoula County Attorney's office has not yet decided whether or not to bring sexual assault charges against Johnson over an incident with a woman. Delaney says there are always 'unexpected challenges' in coaching, and that he and his staff will deal with the situation whatever may happen.
