Authorities say a 61-year-old man suffered a medical condition that caused him to crash his SUV northwest of Stevensville.

Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Ken Breidenbach says William James Fears was driving 3 mph or less on Stevensville Cutoff Road when he crashed sometime Friday morning. The vehicle landed upside down on a grassy patch right on the edge of the Bitterroot River.

Fears, of Stevensville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Breidenbach says the medical examiner determined the crash was caused by a medical condition, but toxicology reports are pending.

The Ravalli County Sheriff's Department reports there are no known witnesses to the accident.
