Authorities in northwestern Montana say a man who fired upon deputies had previously told police "he wasn't going to be taken down last time."

Police were still searching for David Burgert, who fled in his vehicle Sunday morning from officers making a check near Lolo on U.S. Highway 12.

The chase ended when Burgert fired at officers and ran into the woods

Burgert is the former leader of a Flathead County militia group known as Project 7. In February 2002, he was involved in an armed standoff with officers west of Kalispell.

Missoula County Undersheriff Mike Dominick says that Bugert was stopped by the Montana Highway Patrol last week and told patrolmen then that "it would take a SWAT team to bring him in."
