Yellowstone National Park has closed all trails and backcountry campsites in an area where a man was killed by a female grizzly bear on Wednesday.

Park officials say the man was hiking with his wife when they apparently surprised the bear and its cubs. Another group of hikers heard the wife's cry for help and used a cell phone to call 911.

The attack was the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1986. Park spokesman Al Nash says the attack took place on the Wapiti Lake Trail, close to Canyon Village and near the middle of the park. He said park officials haven't taken any action against the bear.

Nash says they won't release the victim's name, age or hometown until his family is notified.
