HAVRE, Mont. (AP) — Police in Havre say a man committed suicide after a 21-hour standoff with law enforcement officers.

Acting Police Chief Gabe Matosich says the man shot himself at 7:42 p.m. Monday and died a short time later at the hospital. Matosich says no officers fired any shots.

Matosich says the standoff began at about 11 p.m. Sunday when an officer tried to make a traffic stop and the man fled his car with a gun. Officers negotiated with the man for hours with assistance from other state and federal officers.

Several downtown businesses were closed Monday as the standoff continued.

Initial reports indicated police had responded to a report of a man with a pistol at a Havre bar on Sunday evening before the standoff began. Officials were not available for comment early Tuesday.
