For the last century, students in Lolo have attended classes in a patchwork of buildings, but in September, Lolo property owners will have the chance to build a new $10.5 million dollar K-4 school building, through a bond issue.

Lolo School Superintendent Mike Magone said on Monday that the proposed new building would be built on Farm Lane.

“The focus for the bond issue is a new K-4 school to be built on 20 acres the district bought nearly 20 years ago on Farm Lane,” Magone said. “The supporting services for the K-4 would include a gymnasium and hopefully, a library, and probably the administrative central office, depending on the estimate for construction of the facility.”

Magone said the school is a K-8 facility, and some of the buildings are over a century old.

“Our lower building, which is our grades five and six level was originally built in 1905 and then built on to in the 1950′s and 60′s,” Magone said. It’s in really rough shape, and that’s the biggest reason we’re asking for the bond issue. The other part is that we are just completely overcrowded, and we are expecting to grow, so we must have more room.”

Magone said the cost per homeowner would be nearly $250 per year for a $200,000 home. The bond issue differs from a levy request, because the funds would be used for a new building and not instructional supplies and materials.

The ballots will be mailed out on September 12, and must be returned by October 1, 2013.

Magone said there will be one more meeting for residents to ask questions about the bond request on September 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the lower school building.
