Is Your Home Breaking the Law? [AUDIO]

If you have a septic system and have recently finished a basement or added a bedroom to your home, you may be in violation of Missoula City County Health Department regulations. On Missoula Real Estate Today with Diane Beck, we learned that many homes built recently with unfinished basements are now in violation, because the septic system was granted for a three bedroom home, and now there are four or more bedrooms. Jim Carlson with the Missoula City County Health Department says the septic certificate is granted based on the number of bedrooms in the home, not the number of bathrooms. One solution Beck says the Health Department suggested, was to take the door off the bedroom and create an archway at the entrance.

Carlson was not in attendance at a Realtors meeting on Thursday in Missoula, but I was able to talk with him on Friday and get his take on the situation.
