Montana gas prices are expected to hold steady over the 4th of July weekend, but anyone driving into Idaho may want to fill up before the border.

“Were not expecting any spikes unforeseen here in the July 4th weekend,” Gasbuddy.com Petroleum Analyst Will Speer said. “So, motorists can expect to pay an average of $2.78 this weekend. A word of caution if your looking to go across the state line to Idaho, you’d be paying about 20 more cents a gallon where the average price in Idaho right now is $2.98.”

Speer says the rising gas prices in Idaho will not be temporary.

“The latest news in Idaho is on July 1st the Idaho legislature has now in affect a seven cent increase in gas tax,” Speer said. “If you haven’t filled up in Idaho, you need to do it fast before stations catch up and increase those prices."

Montana gas prices should peak this weekend, but any declines from there are expected to be slow.
