The Missoula City Fire Department has some helpful tips as people spend more time in the kitchen to prevent fires from starting, and what to do in case of fire.

Fire Marshall Gordon Hughes says there were over 1300 kitchen fires in 2010 on Thanksgiving Day. He offers several suggestions to keep your home and family safe.

Never leave the kitchen while cooking, keep all combustibles away from hot surfaces, and when deep-fat frying a turkey, follow manufacturers instructions, and never deep-fat fry inside.

He says if you do experience a kitchen fire, just get out, and close doors behind you. Contact 9-1-1 from outside the home. If there is a fire in the oven, turn off the power and close the oven door.
