Helena Deals with Unemployment and Layoffs [Audio]

90 employees for Heritage Propane in Helena have been scrambling to find jobs since layoffs were announced in January after a merger with the Amerigas company. Although most of those employees have a strong background in accounting, Helena Job Service supervisor Carol Rule says there are still difficulties ahead. Many of the employees were able to find work with the Student Assistance Foundation a non-profit that focuses on post-secondary education, but there are still some on the job hunt.

Rule expects that many of the workers laid off from heritage will end up switching from the private sector to a public sector position in Helana where accounting skills are a valuable asset. However, many of those workers will likely have to settle for a lower paycheck as well. To give an idea of how competitive some jobs can be, Rule said that she had nearly 200 applicants for a single job.
